Achieve Clearer, More Even Skin

Sometimes your skin doesn’t need a dramatic change. It just needs its clarity back. If your complexion has started to look dull, tired or less vibrant than usual, BroadBand Light (BBL) therapy from Sciton targets visible pigment and discoloration to restore a healthier appearance. This light-based treatment can treat the signs of aging and sun damage for a noticeable refresh without the recovery or downtime of more intensive lasers.

01

What Is BBL?

BBL is the next-generation form of intense pulsed light (IPL). These technologies use the same concept of light that targets pigment, but BBL delivers higher peak energy, treats the skin more quickly, and can be fine-tuned more effectively. With BBL, we can offer treatment modes for lighter skin, darker skin, acne-prone skin and aging skin.

This treatment delivers filtered light energy to the upper layers of the skin where it targets excess melanin (responsible for brown spots) and hemoglobin (the pigment in visible blood vessels). In response, the body clears these damaged cells, breaking up small blood vessels and causing dark spots to flake away, leaving smoother skin. A Stanford University study also found that regular BBL treatments can alter the expression of genes associated with age and help cells to behave more like younger cells.

02

What Can BBL Treat?

Sun Damage and Age Spots

BBL targets the melanin in freckles, sunspots and other types of hyperpigmentation caused by UV exposure.

Redness and Rosacea

Light energy from the BBL device treats visible redness, broken capillaries and flushing, often associated with rosacea.

Acne

The Forever Clear BBL modality uses blue light to destroy acne-causing bacteria and yellow light to calm inflammation.

Unwanted Hair

Forever Bare BBL is a modality that can be used to reduce hair by heating and destroying the hair follicle while preserving surrounding tissues.

Fine Lines and Early Aging

Forever Young BBL uses a multi-pass protocol that targets cellular changes contributing to aging skin and helps patients maintains younger-looking complexion.

Comparison

Combining BBL and MOXI

We often pair BBL with MOXI, a gentle fractional laser also from Sciton. BBL treats pigment and redness while MOXI creates tiny thermal zones on the skin that stimulate cell turnover to improve tone and texture. Using this combination, we can address multiple concerns at the same time, all with minimal downtime.

How BBL Compares to Other Light and Laser Treatments

BBL Traditional IPL MOXI Fractional CO2
Type Pulsed light Pulsed light Fractional laser Fractional laser
Best For Pigment, redness, skin quality Pigment and redness Tone, texture, mild sun damage Deep wrinkles, scars, resurfacing
Downtime Minimal Minimal 1–3 days 5–7+ days

Who Is a Good Candidate for BBL?

BBL is suitable for adults who do not have any current skin infections and who want to improve sun damage on the face or body. Good candidates do not have an active tan or recent unprotected sun exposure since this can increase sensitivity to the treatment. BBL is not recommended for patients who are pregnant or who have certain light-sensitive conditions.

“I’ve never met a better Dr. or staff that truly pays attention to their patients and spends the necessary one on one time to ensure all is understood. Five stars is just not enough to describe how I truly feel about my experience with Dr. Walton and his PA Katie.”

- Wanda Kavanagh

04

How to Prepare for BBL Treatments

  • Avoid sun exposure and self-tanners. Tanned skin absorbs light energy unpredictably and increases the risk of burns or pigmentation changes.
  • Stop using harsh ingredients. Retinoids and exfoliating acids (AHAs/BHAs) are not recommended for several days before treatment.
  • Tell your provider about your current medications. Some medications, like certain antibiotics or acne medications, can increase sun sensitivity and sensitivity to light treatments.
  • Arrive with clean skin. Make sure it is free from makeup, sunscreen, lotions and other products.

05

During Your BBL Treatment

Your provider will cleanse the treatment area and give you protective eyewear to shield your eyes from the light. A thin layer of gel may be applied before the BBL handpiece is moved across the skin in steady, overlapping passes. Most patients describe the sensation as a series of warm snaps, similar to a light rubber band flick, though the chilled sapphire crystal on the handpiece keeps the skin cool and comfortable throughout. Sessions typically take 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.

06

Aftercare Tips for BBL Treatments

  • Protect your skin from the sun. Sun protection is the most important step in maintaining your results. Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day, even if you plan to be indoors.
  • Do not pick at flaking spots. In the weeks after your treatment, your dark spots may darken and then flake. Instead of picking or scrubbing at these spots, let them naturally fall off.
  • Avoid hot temperatures and intense exercise for 24 hours. This includes hot showers, baths, steam rooms, saunas and hot tubs.
  • Keep the skin hydrated. Choose a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer. There are products specifically made for use after procedures.

I cut my pinky flexor tendon mid-July, and had a different doctor operate. When I hadn’t seen the greatest results, I went to Dr. Schaheen and she scheduled me for surgery immediately with full communication on what needed to be improved. My surgery was early October, and the scar is already almost non-existent! She is EXTREMELY knowledgeable, and a joy to talk to. She has the sweetest, most nurturing personality. Dr. Schaheen explains everything top to bottom. The only negative thing about her is that I can’t rate above five stars. Dr. Schaheen, you are a JOY!!!!!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!”
