What Are Chemical Treatments?

During a chemical treatment, we apply a solution to the skin to exfoliate the outer layers. This process encourages cell turnover and allows for the fresh and healthy skin underneath to be visible. Peels come in different strengths, from superficial to deeper depths, which gives us more flexibility when finding the right peel for each patient. PRX Derm Perfexion & PRX Plus — Topical Collagen Biostimulators

PRX Derm Perfexion and PRX Plus are not chemical peels — they are topical collagen biostimulators, which means they work differently from traditional peels. Rather than exfoliating the outer layers of skin, PRX penetrates beneath the surface to stimulate collagen and elastin production at the dermal level, without causing visible peeling, redness, or downtime. The result is skin that looks and feels firmer, brighter, and more even — often with an immediate glow after the first session.

Both treatments use a patented formulation massaged into the skin in layers, with no needles involved. They are appropriate for all skin types and tones and can be performed year-round.

PRX Derm Perfexion

The foundational treatment, best suited for overall skin rejuvenation, firming, anti-aging, and improving the appearance of acne scars and stretch marks. Typically done as a series of four treatments spaced one week apart. Each session takes approximately 30 minutes.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Chemical Treatment?

Chemical peels can be a good fit for adults who want to improve the look and feel of their skin without surgery. Candidacy depends on factors like your skin type, any active skin conditions, recent medications like isotretinoin, pregnancy or breastfeeding status and your overall goals. Your provider will review these with you during your consultation and recommend the peel or series of peels that will be most effective for you.

Pre-Treatment Steps

  • Stop retinoids and exfoliating products. Discontinue using them about 5 to 7 days before and after your peel. This includes retinol, glycolic acid, salicylic acid and scrubs, which can all make skin overly sensitive.
  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning. Stay out of direct sunlight for at least two weeks before your appointment, since tanned or sunburned skin may make you ineligible for the peel.
  • Tell your provider if you have a history of cold sores. Peels around the mouth can trigger a flare-up. Your doctor can prescribe an antiviral medication if needed.
  • Skip waxing, depilatories and laser treatments. Avoid these in the treatment area for about a week before your peel to prevent excess irritation.
  • Come to your appointment with clean skin. Skip moisturizer, makeup and sunscreen the morning of your appointment.

From Your Chemical Treatment Treatment

What to Expect

Your peel will be done in our office, and most appointments take 30 to 45 minutes. We start by cleansing your skin and then applying the chosen chemical treatment solution in layers. You may notice tingling or warmth while the solution is on your skin. Depending on the peel, the solution will either stay on your skin when you leave or be neutralized before you go. Your provider will send you home with clear aftercare instructions, and some peels include a take-home kit for the recovery process.

Recovery and Aftercare

  • Expect some redness, tightness and peeling. This typically begins around day two or three and can last several days. It is a normal part of the process.
  • Don’t pick or peel flaking skin. Pulling at peeling skin can cause scarring or pigment changes, so let it shed naturally.
  • Keep your skin hydrated. Use the gentle moisturizer your provider recommends to keep your skin comfortable while it heals.
  • Wear sunscreen every day. Fresh skin is especially sensitive to UV damage. Apply SPF 30 or higher every day.
  • Avoid intense exercise and heat. Anything that causes you to sweat or exposes the skin to heat should be skipped for at least 24-48 hours to prevent irritation.

Results depend on the peel and how your skin responds. Most patients see improvements that last several months. Lighter peels work best when done in a series, and ongoing treatments help maintain your results long term.

How do I know which peel is right for me?

Your provider will recommend the right option based on your skin type, your concerns, and how much downtime you can accommodate. If you’re dealing primarily with pigmentation, the Precision Plus or Precision Plus + Peptides formulas may be the best fit. For acne, the Purify line offers targeted correction.
